Lightweight, fast, integrated with the terminal, native AI agent integration, supports basically anything you can write code in (curiously, it doesn’t recognize .xaml, but apparently that’s an issue with the xml plugin), everything VS Code could have been if it weren’t a sneaky Chromium running behind the scenes.
But there’s no escaping them at work. I’ve gotten used to using VS Code to work with GitHub Copilot agents (native plugin, right?) and only switching to VS2026 when I need to compile something or run tests because, frankly, the interface in VS2026 is better for that. Sorry, I’m lazy.
For professional use, I rely on the native GitHub Copilot plugin (that sounds weird, doesn’t it? The plugin from Microsoft itself… you get the idea) for ~compliance reasons, but for personal use what I end up using the most is actually OpenCode.
I have both its own provider configured there (which offers free models and a very generous allowance), along with GitHub Copilot and my OpenRouter account. Being able to switch between models and providers within the same session is very convenient.
Although, with GitHub Copilot’s new billing model, it might actually be better for me to remove the account so I don’t use it by accident.
